What Makes Permeable Pavement More Eco-Friendly?

WHAT IS A PERMEABLE DRIVEWAY? & THE ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF PERMEABLE SURFACING VS NON-PERMEABLE SURFACING

A permeable driveway is made of a porous surface that reduces the amount of surface water that runs off during heavy rainfalls. Permeable driveways prevent stormwater runoff, which is why they are the most eco-friendly driveway solution. Typical materials include resin-bound aggregates, gravel, or permeable pavers, all examples of permeable driveway surfaces. They are porous, allowing water to be absorbed through the service and into the ground below, where it can drain back to the water table as nature intended. Permeable driveways are a sustainable pavement solution to the hazardous effects of stormwater run-off and help replenish our water tables. At Dream Pave, we are leading installers of permeable drives and walkways. We are also the authorized Permeable Pavement installer for the Greater Toronto Area, and we only install Permeable Pavement since it is a highly durable, permeable pavement made from resin-bound granite and recycled materials. So, let’s learn more about why Permeable Pavement is the most eco-friendly driveway on the market! Why are permeable driveways the most eco-friendly Driveways?

Prevent Flooding and Stormwater Pollution

Permeable pavement is incredibly porous. It has a permeable sub-base that allows water to drain 30 cm below the surface back into the soil. Therefore, an enormous amount of water per second can drain through the Permeable Pavement surface. So, it has the potential to play a major role in flood reduction. Additionally, Permeable Pavement prevents stormwater pollution from running into the sewers, rivers, streams, and our water supply.

Replenishes Aquifers

Permeable pavement functions just like natural soil. It allows water to permeate through and return back to the water table. So, it helps replenish aquifers. Plus, this has a positive effect on surrounding vegetation and tree-root systems.

Low-Impact Development (LID)

Permeable Pavement mitigates flooding and circumvents the need for traditional stormwater infrastructure. So, it can save developers money as a Low-Impact Development (LID) strategy.

Eco-Friendly Driveway Uses Less Salt in the Winter

Permeable Pavement is ideal for Canada’s Climate. Snow melts 50% faster. Therefore, 50% less salt is required to melt ice. Therefore, there’s less salt contaminating local waterways and treatment plants. Win, win, and win!

100% Natural Canadian Granite

The unique Permeable Pavement surface is 100% natural Canadian granite, crushed into small, pea-sized aggregate (stones). This granite is a by-product of other granite products. For example, recycled countertops. Reuse. Recycle. Repurpose. This is another reason why Permeable Pavement is the most eco-friendly driveway.

Low Carbon Footprint

Permeable Pavement has the lowest carbon footprint of any surfacing material to produce. This Earth Conscious Surfacing™ uses 5.4 kg of recycled plastic per square meter and has zero Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions. The Permeable Pavement Resin is 50% plant-based and non-flammable. Moreover, there’s no leeching or toxic run-off from the Permeable Pavement Resin. Additionally, the Permeable Pavement Resin and aggregate are mixed and poured on-site. There are no in manufacturing plants or hauling trucks. In fact, Permeable Pavement’s production carbon footprint is 4-8 times less than asphalt and concrete.

Durable, Eco-Friendly Driveway with 40+ Year Rating

Independent scientific testing by the University of Ottawa rates Permeable Pavement with an expected Lifespan of 40+ years. Most importantly, this rating is within our Canadian climate. Durability means less waste. This is another reason why Permeable Pavement is the most eco-friendly driveway. Get inspired by exploring our Online Project Gallery. When deciding on landscaping choices, more decisions are being made about the environmental benefits that permeable pavements provide. Concerns about the increase of flash storms and basement flooding are becoming more top of mind, especially if your landscape consists of concrete or asphalt hardscaping, as these surfaces are impervious. As a result, stormwater causes surface run-off, which does not soak back into the ground naturally. Consequently, this causes issues like flooding and stormwater pollution. Fortunately, permeable pavements, as installed by Dream Pave, solve this dilemma. So, if it’s time to replace a driveway, walkway, or patio, consider the many environmental benefits of installing a permeable pavement.

Flood Reduction

The first key benefit is that permeable pavement helps maintain the natural water cycle. With traditional impervious pavement such as concrete and especially asphalt (aka tar) surfaces, rainwater runs across the surface and it creates problems. For example, an increased risk of basement flooding and stormwater pollution. On the flip side, permeable pavement is a porous surface that eliminates surface run-off by allowing stormwater to ‘be absorbed’ through the surface and then infiltrate back into the soil below. To achieve this, DreamPave installs a 12″ permeable sub-base that allows water to drain below the surface and back into the soil.

Groundwater Protection

Permeable surfaces help to protect groundwater, our primary source of drinking water. An enormous amount of water per second can be drained using the Permeable Pavement resin-bound surface that we installed. So, it plays a major role in flood reduction. Plus, with permeable pavement, puddles are a thing of the past – the surface dries within minutes! The amount of available groundwater has been severely reduced over time, partly due to impermeable surfaces used in urban and suburban construction. Impermeable surfaces prevent rain and snow from replenishing groundwater. Additionally, as runoff water cannot penetrate concrete and asphalt, it is diverted into storm sewage systems, streams, and, finally, local bodies of water. Runoff water from pavement picks up toxic substances like car oil or pesticide chemicals and dumps them into surrounding bodies of water. As a result, our drinking water supply becomes polluted over time. This can be addressed by installing permeable pavement. For instance, DreamPave’s permeability allows for sustainable rainwater management. Rainwater seeps away naturally and, as a result, contributes to groundwater reserves.

Permeable Pavement Helps Prevent the Accumulation of Heat Island Effect

Further, heat buildup in and around cities is a problem with impermeable pavement. Impermeable materials, such as asphalt and concrete, absorb sunlight and reflect it back as heat. This heat buildup is called the urban heat island effect. Permeable surfaces, like DreamPave, enhance water evaporation. In turn, this cools the pavement surface and ambient air temperature. Developed by extensive scientific research and testing via the University of Ottawa and the National Research Council of Canada, DreamPave’s intelligent formula creates high-strength surfacing that allows rainwater to seep into the soil. Therefore, it reduces the stress and pollution on local waterways. Plus, moisture evaporates quickly from its surface, reducing urban heat islands (UHI). DreamPave is not just an alternative to traditional surfacing but the most advanced approach to designing and constructing walkways, driveways, and public spaces. What Makes Permeable Pavement More Eco-Friendly?

At DreamPave, we take great pride in offering a permeable pavement solution that not only provides a durable and reliable surface but also prioritizes environmental sustainability. Our commitment to eco-friendliness extends across every aspect of our product, from the materials we use to the benefits it provides for the environment. Let’s explore in greater detail what makes DreamPave the most environmentally conscious choice for your surfacing needs. Prevents Flooding and Stormwater Pollution One of the most significant environmental benefits of DreamPave is its ability to prevent flooding and reduce stormwater pollution. Traditional pavement materials create impermeable surfaces that contribute to stormwater runoff, leading to overwhelmed drainage systems and increased pollution in waterways. However, DreamPave’s porous design allows water to penetrate the surface and seep into the underlying soil, effectively managing stormwater and reducing the risk of flooding. By diverting water away from sewers and filtration systems, DreamPave helps maintain the integrity of local waterways and ecosystems, promoting cleaner and healthier environments for communities.

Replenishes Aquifers

In addition to managing stormwater, DreamPave also plays a crucial role in replenishing aquifers and maintaining groundwater levels. The permeable nature of DreamPave allows water to percolate through the surface and into the ground below, where it can recharge aquifers and support surrounding vegetation. This natural infiltration process helps sustain ecosystems by providing essential hydration for plants and wildlife. By mimicking the natural water cycle, DreamPave contributes to the overall health and resilience of the environment, fostering sustainable landscapes for generations to come.

Low-Impact Development (LID)

As a low-impact development strategy, DreamPave offers a sustainable alternative to traditional stormwater management practices. By reducing runoff and minimizing the need for costly drainage infrastructure, DreamPave helps developers create more resilient and environmentally friendly landscapes. With its ability to mitigate flooding and control stormwater pollution, DreamPave promotes responsible land use and conservation, making it an ideal choice for eco-conscious projects and developments.

Eco-Friendly Winter Maintenance

In regions with cold climates and snowfall, DreamPave’s eco-friendly properties extend to winter maintenance practices. The permeable surface of DreamPave promotes faster snowmelt, reducing the need for de-icing chemicals such as salt. By accelerating the melting process, DreamPave helps minimize the environmental impact of winter maintenance activities, such as salt runoff and contamination of waterways. This environmentally conscious approach to winter maintenance ensures safer and more sustainable outcomes for communities and ecosystems alike.
