Installing a Permeable Driveway: Step-by-Step Guide by Dream Pave

Our Process of Installing A Permeable Driveway

Permeable driveways by Dream Pave offer a sustainable alternative to traditional paving options, allowing rainwater to pass through and effectively reducing runoff. If you’re considering this environmentally-friendly upgrade, here are the essential steps delivered by Dream Pave, the pioneers of permeable pavement. Our expert teams will professionally install your permeable driveway that not only looks great, but lasts, functions well, and benefits your property and the ecosystem.

Step 1: Removal and Recycling of Existing Surface

The first step in Dream Pave’s installation process is to remove the existing surface material. Whether your driveway is made of concrete, asphalt, or gravel, we extract it completely to create a clean slate for the permeable system. As we remove the old surface, we will recycle the material as part of our commitment to sustainable practices. Once the old surface is cleared, we inspect the underlying soil for compaction and drainage issues that may need addressing during the next step – Excavation.

Step 2: Excavation and Construction of Permeable Base

Once the old surface is removed, the next phase is excavation and the construction of a permeable base. We begin by digging down to the necessary depth, generally around 8 to 12 inches, depending on your specific site conditions and other variables our experts will assess. Once excavated, install a geogrid fabric which helps stabilize the base and supports the weight of vehicles while allowing water to flow freely. Following the geogrid installation, we backfill using  3/4″ clear stone to create the permeable, or open-grade base. This stone layer acts as a drainage system, allowing water to filter down while providing structural integrity for the driveway.

Step 3: Mixing Aggregate and Stoneset Premium Resin

The final step involves preparing and installing the permeable surface layer. Start by mixing aggregate with Stoneset premium resin, which binds the stone materials together while maintaining permeability. The resin ensures that the surface is durable and resistant to cracking, making it suitable for vehicular traffic. Once your mixture is ready, evenly spread it over the previously prepared base and we use professional tools, along with experienced craftmanship to achieve a level surface. We ensure the layer is installed to a specifically desired thickness, typically about 25-40mm, for optimal performance. After installation, we ask you to allow the surface to cure for up to 5 days to ensure durability and longevity.

Conclusion

By following these steps—removing the old surface, constructing a permeable base, and mixing Canadian Granite aggregate with StoneSet Premium resin for the surface layer— we will create a functional and beautiful permeable driveway (walkway or patio).  Not only does this installation improve the aesthetics of your property, but it also contributes to effective water management and environmental sustainability.

With a permeable driveway, you will enjoy not just a practical addition to your home, but also a commitment to enhancing the surrounding ecosystem.
