Resin bound pavement is made by mixing aggregate stones (at Dream Pave, we use granite chips) with resin. The agitation in a special mixer coats the stones in the premium resin coating. The finished product is an attractive, smooth surface that can last for up to 30 years.

For a low maintenance goal, resin bound driveways are a good low maintenance choice. An occasional (yearly) light power-wash will be enough to keep your driveway looking good and remove (if) any accumulation of dirt. The durability of a resin bound aggregate driveway is down to its flexibility of the resin component. Although the surface is permeable, it can withstand several tonnes of weight. It’s not prone to cracking like some other materials are. While you can lay resin-bound pavement on top of pretty much any surface, be sure your base has structural integrity, and that it is also permeable. Also, never wash a resin-bound driveway with boiling water – – it can impact the resin.

Smooth and slip resistant

Contrary to myths, smooth resin bound driveways offer no fear of trip hazards and are considered slip-resistant since the surface texture resembles that of textured stone. Dream Pave can enhance that effect by adding natural types of grit to the top layer before it fully cures. A big benefit of a permeable surface for Canadian homeowners is that it reduces the risk of ice forming by eliminating standing water. After the snow falls, it melts, and on an impermeable surface, it then turns to ice. A Dream Pave permeable surface doesn’t allow standing water, so the melting snow slowly drains below the surface. Let’s call it an engineering hack.

How Do We Install Permeable Driveway?

A permeable driveway is commonly referred to as a green driveway solution. More eco-friendly than asphalt, concrete, or interlock, a permeable driveway by Dream Pave doesn’t only minimizes runoff, it eliminates surface run-off which enters our sewers than pollutes our waterways.

1. Testing the Soil after Excavation

First, we call Ontario One Call, which every reputable landscape contractor will do at no cost on your behalf to locate underground utilities located in the area to be excavated. Next, we remove the existing surface layer. At Dream Pave, we ensure that we recycle the existing surface. Nothing we remove from your current driveway (or walkway, patio) ends up in a landfill! We then perform a percolation test, when required, to understand the soil infiltration rate or how quickly the soil absorbs water. Based on the soil infiltration rate, that will determine the minimum depth, usually 13 inches. If the infiltration rate is low, then you may need a deeper base or a drainage pipe is also an option.

2. Prepare the permeable Base Layer

Workers place a 6-inch layer of 3/4 inch (19mm) angular clearstone with that ‘lock’ together over the excavation. We then apply the first pass of a plate compactor to go across and lengthwise over it twice. We then add another 6-inch layer of same 3/4 angular clearstone, compacting it twice more.

3. Installing the Border

In order to provide a strong edge for the permeable surface layer edging to be hand troweled, we install an aluminum restraining edge at no charge. The other, more popular choice, is the installation of a paver edging or border. This not only provides a stronger edge that you can drive on without damaging the edge but also provides a stellar finish to your stunning new permeable driveway surface. You can choose from a variety of pavers from leaders like UniLock, Permacon and so on.

4. Installing the Permeable Pavement permeable surface Layer

Next, we install the final layer. That is the Dream Pave X StoneSet Resin Bound Aggregate surface layer.
